narrative Theory (point 25)

Todorov's narrative Theory

Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.

There are five stages the narrative can progress through:
1. A state of equilibrium (All is as it should be.)
2. A disruption of that order by an event.
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred.
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption.
5. A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium.

In our film we used these stages to build our film as following:

1-      Each character lives its own world as normal he is working on his blog and she is working on her music.
2-       Suddenly, he gets a writing block and she gets rejected, therefor, both characters’ lives in a state of emotional crash and disappointments.
3-      The recognition was when he knew that the girl was his new inspiration and he blogged about that.
4-      Repairing the damage was when he asked her for a drink and asking for help and she asked him if she could sing his poems.
5-      The return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium happens when she dies and then he gets bake to his blog with her inspiration.
